I was born in Rotherham, in Yorkshire, England, to Welsh parents and the family moved back to Wales soon after I was born. I attended school in Bridgend in South Wales and graduated as a schoolteacher from Trinity College in Carmarthen. I received post-graduate training in theatre from the Welsh College of Music and Drama. Stirred by youthful wanderlust, I came to the United States, moved to Iowa City, and spent several years acting in university productions and playing music locally. I decided to get serious about the theatre and entered the M.F.A. program in directing at the U of Iowa, graduating three years later.
With my degree in pocket, I decided to try my luck in the "Big City" and moved to Chicago. I was lucky enough to work with some wonderful theatres in Chicago and the upper Midwest, including Shakespeare Repertory Theater, The Steppenwolf, Shattered Globe, American Players in Spring Green, Wisconsin, and the Purple Rose in Michigan. I also had a couple of appearances in TV shows here and back in Wales, and like most actors, helped support myself by doing commercials, industrial video, and part-time jobs tending bar, driving a cab, and most anything that would pay the bills.
Tired of the bustle of city life, and wanting to try something new, challenging and stimulating, I decided to go to law school and graduated with high distinction of the University of Iowa College of Law in 1999. After brief stints as a judicial clerk in Fort Madison, and at the Public Defender's office in Waterloo, I settled back in Iowa City to build a practice and raise a family and now live here in Iowa City with my wife Jennifer, daughter Emma, dog Pepper (a.k.a. the Poopster) , and two cats, Ripley (believe it or not) and Simon.
